Morphological negation (Surgut Khanty)

NegPtclNonStc: Negation of the predicate is expressed through the use of a standard negative word, which cannot function alone as a sentence.


(1a) mač məŋ-ati jowət.

visitor man we-dat arrive.pst.3sg

‘A guest has arrived.’ (L. N. K.)


(1b) mač məŋ-ati əntə jowət.

visitor man we-dat neg arrive.pst.3sg

‘We don’t have visitors.’ (L. N. K.)


(1c) mač jowət? ənta.

visitor man arrive.pst.3sg neg

‘Has the visitor arrived yet? No.’ (L. N. K.)


In Surgut Khanty, sentential elements can be negated with the әntә negative particle, while әnta is used for the negation of whole sentences.
