Word order of predicative comparative constructions (Hungarian)

AdjMSt: The adjective is followed by the marker, then the standard.


(1) a hód nagy-obb a vidrá-nál.

the beaver big-comp the otter-ade

’The beaver is bigger than the otter.’


(2) a hód nagy-obb,mint a vidra.

the beaver big-comp than the otter

’The beaver is bigger than the otter.’


In Hungarian predicative comparative constructions, the adjective is in the comparative form and it is put before the standard of comparison. (Cf. Lengyel 2000a: 142‒151, Kenesei et al. 1998: 151‒155).
