Case marking on pronouns (Hungarian)

Suppl: The pronominal paradigm for case includes suppletive forms.

(1) ki-hez jö-tt-él? hozzád.

who-all come-pst-2sg you.all

’Who did you come to see? You.

(2) ki-nek van toll-a? nekem.

who-dat have.prs.3sg pen-3sg I.dat

’Who has a pen? I do.’

In Hungarian, except for the nominative and the accusative, case-marked personal pronouns are formed by attaching person affixes to the case marking suffixes as stems. The nominative form of the personal pronoun can extend these compositional forms in the emphatic function: e.g. tőlem ‘from me’ éntőlem ‘from ME’ (D. Mátai 2003a: 212‒216). The accusative forms in the first and the second person (engem, téged, minket, titeket) are idiosyncratic even in relation to each other.
