Demonstrative and personal pronouns in non­subject (oblique) position (Synja Khanty)

PPNonAnim~DemNonSubj: Facultative use of demonstrative pronouns in non­subject position is permitted for nonhuman or nonliving entities, but only personal pronouns can be used for human or living entities.


(1) tam lūxs-em. luwel-a pisma xanš-l-ǝm.

this I friend-1sg I (s)he-lat letter write-prs-1sg

‘This is my friend. I’m writing him / her a letter.’ (S. O.)


(2) tam-ǝt lūxs-ǝt-em. lijlal-a pisma xanš-l-ǝm.

this-pl I friend-pl-1sg I they-lat letter write-prs-1sg

‘These are my friends. I write them letters.’ (S. O.)


(3) tam i astakan. luwel-a šaj pon-l-ǝm.

this a glass I it-lat tea put-prs-1sg

‘This is a glass. I’m pouring tea into it.’ (S. O.)


(4) tam i astakan. tami-ja šaj pon-l-ǝm.

this a glass I det-lat tea put-prs-1sg

‘This is a glass. I’m pouring tea into it.’ (S. O.)


(5) tam-ǝt astakan-ǝt. lijlal-a šaj pon-l-ǝm.

this-pl glass-pl I they-lat tea put-prs-1sg

‘These are glasses. I’m pouring tea into them.’ (S. O.)


(6) tam-ǝt astakan-ǝt. tam-ǝt-a šaj pon-l-ǝm.

In Synja Khanty, non-subject demonstrative pronouns (1)-(2) in anaphoric function can substitute third person personal pronouns, if their referents are inanimate (3)-(6) (S. O.).
