Syntactic relations within the adpositional phrase (Synja Khanty)

Adp=NNonGov: Adpositions do not behave like verbs. Their complements appear in base form without inflection.


(1) pasan puŋəl-ən xoloďiľńik ōmǝs-əl.

table next_to-loc refrigerator sit-prs.3sg

‘There is a refrigerator next to the table.’ (S. O.)


(2) (mā) šanš-em-n išńi.

I behind-1sg-loc window

‘There is a window behind me.’ (S. O.)


In Synja Khanty, the nominal (1) and the pronominal (2) complements of postpositions are in their base forms (cf. Honti 1984: 80‒82, Nikolaeva 1999a: 36‒37, Onina 2009: 48‒49, S. O.).
