Tense marking (Synja Khanty)

SuffT: Tense is expressed through the use of a special suffix.

PerifT: Tense is expressed periphrastically.


(1) wēr-l-əm.

make-prs-1sg

‘I’m making something.’ (Onina 2009: 35)


(2) wēr-s-əm.

make-pst-1sg

‘I made something.’ (Onina 2009: 35)


(3) wēr-ti pit-l-əm.

make-inf start-prs-sg1

‘I’m going to make something.’ (Onina 2009: 35)


In Synja Khanty, the marker of the present tense is -l (1), and the suffix of the past tense is -s (2). The future tense is expressed by the present tense form of the auxiliary pitti ‘start’ and the infinitive of the main verb (cf. Onina 2009 33˗43).
