Basic word order (S, V, O) (Synja Khanty)

SOV: The basic word order is SOV.

(1) pōx ńāń lē-l.

boy bread eat-prs.3sg

’The boy is eating bread.’ (S. O.)

(2) miša pisma xanš-l.

Misha letter write-prs.3sg

’Misha is writing a letter.’ (S. O.)

In Synja Khanty, the subject of transitive (and intransitive) verbs is the first element of the neutral sentence, while the verbal predicate is at the end. Thus the object is located typically between the subject and the verb (1), (2) (cf. Honti 1984: 88‒89, Nikolaeva 1999a: 57‒61).
