Nominal and locational predication (Hungarian)

SplitCopLoc: Locational predicates are formed with a copula or auxiliary; nominal predicates are not.

+Cmnt: Although the language displays the features a value listed, additional information is needed to clarify its type.

(1) levente vadász.

Levente hunter

‘Levente is a hunter.’

(2) én vadász vagy-ok.

I hunter cop-prs.1sg

‘I’m a hunter.’

(3) levente az erdő-ben van.

Levente the forest-ine cop.prs.3sg

‘Levente is in the forest.’

(4) én az erdő-ben vagy-ok.

I the forest-ine cop-prs.1sg.

‘I’m in the forest.’

In the Hungarian basic construction (indicative mood, present tense, third person singular subject) (1), (3), only the locational predicate (3) contains a copula. In non-basic constructions (2), (4), the copula is compulsory in every person and number with both predicate types.
