Basic subordinate word order (S, V, O) (Synja Khanty)

SOV: Basic subordinate word order is SOV.


(1) miša ūn xul wānt-ǝs.

Misha big fish see-pst.3sg

‘Misha saw a big fish.’


(2) miša jāsta-s, luw ūn xul wānt-ǝs.

Misha say-pst.3sg he big fish see-pst.3sg

‘Misha said that he had seen a big fish.’


In Synja Khanty subordinations (2), the subordinate clause containing the finite verb form shows the same word order (SOV) that is characteristic of simple sentences (1) (cf. Honti 1984: 88‒89, Nikolaeva 1999a: 57‒61, S. O.).
