Word order within possessive constructions (Synja Khanty)

GenPoss: The possessor, whether noun or pronoun, precedes the possessed noun.


(1) jūwan xɔ̄t

Ivan house

’Ivan’s house’ (S. O.)


(2) jūwan xɔ̄t-l

Ivan house-3sg

’Ivan’s house’ (S. O.)


(3) āmp-em

I dog-1sg

’my dog’ (S. O.)


In Synja Khanty, the nominal (1)–(2) and pronominal (3) possessors always precede the possessed entity, irrespective of the markedness of the possessed entity (cf. Abondolo 1998: 378–379, Honti 1984: 90–91, Nikolaeva 1999a: 79–84).
