VAux: The auxiliary follows the main verb.
(1) wera ol-ti pit-l.
Vera sleep-inf fut-3sg
‘Vera is going to sleep.’ (S. O.)
(2) wera-ja jol-n ūl-ti mɔ̄s-l.
Vera-lat home-loc be-inf must-3sg
‘Vera must be home.’ (F. L.)
In Synja Khanty, auxiliaries (e.g. the future marker pit- ‘begin’) are conjugated just like typical verbs (Onina 2009: 34‒35, Honti 1984: 51‒52) and, similarily, they are put at the end of the clause. The mɔ̄s ‘must’ modal auxiliary also follows the main verb.
