Marking of function S on nouns (Northern Mansi)

Neutr: Case alignment is neutral: the functions S, A, and P are not marked morphologically.


(1) āmp χājtyγti.

dog run_around.prs.3sg

‘The dog is running around.’ (S. D.)


(2) āmp sāli kinsi.

dog reindeer look_for.prs.3sg

‘The dog is looking for the reindeer.’ (S. D.)


In Northern Mansi, the S is marked by a zero morpheme in active sentences (1), which is identical to the marking of A’s in active constructions (2). Due to the fact that nouns do not have accusative forms in Mansi (Riese 2001), the P is unmarked (2).
