Reduplication (Surgut Khanty)

TtlRdp: Total reduplication of an entire word, relative stem, or absolute stem (root) is used productively.

(1) ťi mən, mən.

so go.pst.3sg go.pst.3sg

’He was wandering all around.’

(2) ʌüw ār-ār toj.

he/she lot lot possess.pst.3sg

’He/she had a lot of possessions.’

(3) ənəʌ-nam ənəʌ, ōɣər-nam ōɣər

big-appr big tall-appr tall

’very big, very tall’

Reduplication supplements a rich morphological system in Surgut Khanty. The reduplication of a verb expresses the permanence of the event (1), while the reduplication of an adjective and a numerical quantifier is the tool of intensification (2), (3).
