Marking possession by pronouns (Surgut Khanty)

PossSuff: Possession is expressed through the use of a suffix on the possessed noun; the pronoun referring to the possessor does not appear, regardless of person.

PrsPPossSuff: Possession is expressed through the use of a personal pronoun, in base form, with a suffix on the possessed noun.

(1) (mā) näm-am

I name-1sg

‘my name’

(2) (nüŋ) āmp-ɣəʌ-a

you dog-du-sg2

‘your dog’

(3) (mīn) qūt-mən

we_two house-1du

‘our house’

(4) (ʌəɣ) wēʌi-ʌ-aʌ

they reindeer-pl-3pl

‘their reindeers’

In Surgut Khanty, if the possessor is expressed by a personal pronoun, its referent can appear in the sentence but it is optional. However, the noun denoting the possessed entity always takes a suffix which reflects the person and number of the possessor. Thus, in the examples, the personal pronouns in brackets can be omitted. If they appear, they fulfill an emphatic function.
