Future tense (Hungarian)

FutOptPfr: Grammatical expression of future time is optional; when used, it is expressed through the use of an auxiliary verb in addition to some form of the main verb, usually nonfinite.


(1) este ír-ni fog-ok egy level-et.

in_the_evening write-inf fut-1sg a letter-acc

‘I’m going to write a letter in the evening.’


(2) este ír-ok egy level-et.

in_the_evening write-prs.1sg a letter-acc

‘I’m going to write a letter in the evening.’


The future tense can be expressed by the present tense form of the verb, or the auxiliary + infinitive construction (1) in Hungarian (cf. Kugler 2000a: 104‒123, Kiefer 2003: 212‒222).
