Reduplication (Hungarian)

TtlRdp: Total reduplication of an entire word, relative stem, or absolute stem (root) is used productively.


(1a) a lány sír-t.

the girl cry-pst.3sg

’The girl was crying.’


(1a) a lány csak sír-t, sír-t.

the girl just cry-pst.3sg cry-pst.3sg

’The girl was just crying and crying.’ = ’The girl has been crying for a long time.’


(2a) a fiú ki-néz az ablak-on.

the boy out-look.prs.3sg the window-sup

’The boy was looking out the window.’


(2b) a fiú ki-ki-néz az ablak-on.

the boy out-out-look.prs.3sg the window-sup

’The boy was looking out the window.’ = ’He looked out a few times.’


Reduplication has various grammatical and pragmatic functions in Hungarian. The reduplication of verbal prefixes adds frequentative meaning to the basic constructions (cf. Kenesei et al. 1998: 360).
