Word order of auxiliaries (Hungarian)

AuxV: The auxiliary precedes the main verb.

VAux: The auxiliary follows the main verb.


(1) kati énekel-ni fog.

Kati sing-inf fut.3sg

‘Kati is going to sing.’


(2) kati-nak énekel-ni-e kell.

Kati-dat sing-inf-3sg must.prs.3sg

‘Kati have to sing.’


(3) kati level-et fog ír-ni.

Kati letter-acc fut.3sg write-inf

‘Kati is going to write a letter.’


(4) kati-nak level-et kell ír-ni-a.

Kati-dat letter-acc must.prs.3sg write-inf-3sg

‘Kati have to write a letter.’


In Hungarian, intransitive verbs precede (1)-(2), while transitive verbs typically follow the auxiliaries (3)-(4) (cf. Lengyel 2000b: 252, Kiefer 2003: 212, É. Kiss 2002: 205‒229).
