Associative plural (Surgut Khanty)

SpAffPlAss: A special affix on the noun is used to mark the associative plural.


(1) ɣ-sa-t

father-asc-pl

‘the children of one father, siblings’


(2) mīn nüŋati-nat jēji-sa-ɣən.

we_two you-com brother-asc-du

‘the two of us, we are siblings’ (Pesikova et al. 1996: 107.)


The -sa associative plural marker in Surgut Khanty can only be used with family relation terms. It expresses family and kinship relationship. The construction consists of a family relation term, the -sa morpheme, and the dual or the plural marker.
