Basic word order of nominal adverbials (Surgut Khanty)

XOV: Basic word order is XOV.


(1) mīša jawən-nə ənəʌ sɔ̄rt wäʌ.

Misha river-loc big pike kill.pst.3sg

‘Misha caught a big pike in the river.’


(2) īmi īke-ʌ kiča ʌītot wär-ʌ.

woman man-3sg for food make-prs.3sg

‘The woman is cooking for her husband.’


In Surgut Khanty, the predicate is typically at the end of the sentence, while the subject is at the beginning. The other elements of the sentence are put between the subject and the predicate. The object comes right before the verb and the adverbials precede the object.
