Intransitive verbs with null arguments (Surgut Khanty)

ZeroIntr: Avalent verbs, characterized by being able to form a non­elliptical, grammatical clause without a single argument, exist as a subclass of intransitive verbs.


(1) jowint-əɣ.

become-night-pst.3sg

’It grew dark.’ (Pesikova–Pokačeva 2006: 12.)


(2) nēwint-əɣ.

become-light-pst.3sg

’The sun came up.’ (Pesikova–Pokačeva 2006: 13.)


(3) ʌoŋtəqs-əɣ.

start the summer-pst.3sg

’The summer has started.’ (Pesikova–Pokačeva 2006: 15.)


(4) jom-əʌ.

rain-prs.3sg

’It is raining.’ (L. N. K.)


In Surgut Khanty, there are verbs connected to weather phenomena that do not require any arguments.
