Use of copula with adverbial predicate (Surgut Khanty)

AdvCopNonPres: The copula does occur with adverbial predicates, with the exception of unmarked predicate forms.

(1) ʌüw kēm-ən.

he/she ki-loc

’He/she is outside.’

(2) ʌüw kēm-ən woʌ.

ő ki-loc cop.pst.3sg

’He/she was outside.’

With adverbial predicates, no copula is used in the present in Surgut Khanty, irrespective of the subject’s person. In the past tense, however, copula does occur in every person and number.
