Word order of adjectives and degree words (Surgut Khanty)

DegAdj: Degree words always (or almost always) precede adjectives.


(1) tēmi jəmat sīkkəŋ suntuk.

this very beautiful box

‘This is a very beautiful box.’ (Csepregi 1998: 76.)


(2) ťū īmi toŋqə jəm.

det woman very good

‘That woman is a very good person.’


In Surgut Khanty, the degree word always precedes the adjective, both in modifier (1) and in predicative functions (2).
