Word order of dependent polar questions (Surgut Khanty)

OblPq=Pq: The word order of dependent polar questions is the same as in independent polar questions.


(1a) liza ānɣ-ət sawn-ət ʎūwit-əɣ.

Liza plate-pl bowl-pl wash-pst.3sg

‘Liza is washed the dishes.’ (L. N. K.)


(1b) liza ānɣ-ət sawn-ət ʎūwit-əɣ?

Liza plate-pl bowl-pl wash-pst.3sg

‘Did Liza wash the dishes?’ (L. N. K.)


(2) ʌüw pӯrip-əɣ, liza ānɣ-ət sawn-ət ʎūwit-əɣ wəs əntə.

(s)he ask-pst.3sg Liza plate-pl bowl-pl wash-pst.3sg cnj neg

‘He/she asked whether Liza had washed the dishes (or not).’


The basic word order in Surgut Khanty is SOV. The same basic word order is used in indicative sentences (1a), simple polar questions (1b), and embedded polar questions (2).
