Marking possession by pronouns

(1) (mā)  āmp-em

     I        dog-1SG

     ‘my dog’ (S. O.)

(2a) pox  āp

       boy  dog

       ‘the boy’s dog’ (S. O.)

(2b) pox  āmp-ǝl

       boy  dog-3SG

       ‘the boy’s dog’ (S. O.)

In Synja Khanty, if the possessor is expressed by a personal pronoun (1), the personal suffix on the word denoting the possessed entity is compulsory. However, personal suffix is optional if the possessor is expressed by a noun (2a, 2b). The possessed entity next to a pronominal possessor is always marked (cf. Abondolo 1998: 378–379, Honti  1984: 90–91, Sz. Kispál  ‒  F. Mészáros 1980: 28‒31, Nikolaeva 1999a: 79–84, S. O.). The omission of  a pronominal possessor is very frequent (Honti 1984: 90).
