Order of person markers on the verb

This parameter considers person marking (PM) of verbal (V) arguments A and P on monotransitive verbs. Specifically, it examines the order of these markers with respect to each other and to the verb stem. Independent sentences should be examined in which the transitive verb appears in the present tense, indicative mood, and active voice; A (animate, conscious performer of action) and P should be represented by nouns or personal pronouns; and the verb shows the maximum possible agreement in terms of person.

Types:

NoPM: The verb does not show person agreement with any of its arguments.

NoP: The verb shows person agreement only with A.

NoA: The verb shows person agreement only with P.

Either: The verb shows person agreement with either A or P, but not simultaneous agreement with both.

APV: Both A and P appear as prefixes, with A preceding P.

VAP: Both A and P appear as suffixes, with A preceding P.

AVP: A appears as a prefix preceding the suffix P.

PAV: Both A and P appear as prefixes, with P preceding A.

VPA: Both A and P appear as suffixes, with P preceding A.

PVA: P appears as a prefix preceding the suffix A.

APVAP: A precedes P; both appear as either prefixes or suffixes, depending on specific grammatical criteria.

PAVPA: P precedes A; both appear as either prefixes or suffixes, depending on specific grammatical criteria.

AP~PA: A may precede P, or P may precede A; the order depends on specific grammatical criteria.

FusionV: Both A and P are expressed in the form of a single prefix. This synthetic (polyexponential) morpheme cannot be broken into units to express A and P separately.

VFusion: Both A and P are expressed in the form of a single suffix. This synthetic (polyexponential) morpheme cannot be broken into units to express A and P separately.

When a language displays more than one strategy, two values can be listed. If one strategy is dominant, a slash (/) can separate the two values, with the dominant value appearing first; if neither is dominant, they are listed with an ampersand (&) separating the two. The parameter values listed here should not conflict with those listed for the language for the parameter Order of verbal affixes. Any problems arising from the assignment of parameter values should be detailed in the commentary for both parameters.
